‘Twas the Night Before COVID

‘Twas the night before COVID, when all through the land,

Not a leader was worried, no vaccine was planned,

We were all just slaving at our open plan desk,

In a living nightmare getting more Kafkaesque

The fat cats were purring in their high penthouse suites,

Never giving a toss for the man on the streets,

The scientists were wailing, alas, to deaf ears,

MPs fought as Remainers v Brexiteers

It seemed no one was happy, and life was a mess,

Everyone was suffering from unending stress,

The only release was a night down the pub,

A rave at the disco, or supporting your club

We were dimly aware of a new Asian Flu,

After SARS, Bird and Pig scares it never felt true,

When, what to our wondering eyes should appear,

But a miniature virus, we all came to fear,

Too Late! We attempted to lockdown the nations,

Emptying offices, shops, roads, planes, and stations,

More rapid than eagles the pandemic took hold,

Causing more suffering than the worst flu and cold

In shock and confusion, we all stayed in one place,

Huddling behind masks, chanting Hands, Face, and Space,

As furlough extended, worry started to fade,

We relaxed in our dens and became less afraid

Did we miss the commuting, by car, bus or train?

Or the endless large coffees, corrupting our brain?

No! Avoiding the worst of our colleagues was great,

With peace and tranquillity, we lowered our heart rate

The more we stay home with our loved ones together,

The more we wish it could stay like this forever,

Less stress and less worry, more time and more happy,

We start feeling human, not shat upon and crappy

Living and talking with our family and friends,

Allows us to see life through a rose-tinted lens,

Our priorities change – we become better folk,

Less likely to cuss, fight, drink, or get hooked on coke

So, when we leave lockdown, don’t rush back to the strife,

Think deeply on what is important in life,

It’s not our career that defines who we are,

It’s how we treat ourselves and others by far

As Christmas approaches with thousands infected,

Spare a thought for those people still badly affected,

Let’s hope by next year that the end is in sight,

Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night.
